The story
Armed Forces Flag Day is observed on 7 December to honour the personnel of India's Army, Navy and Air Force and to support serving members, veterans and their families. The observance began after independence, when the Government decided in 1949 to dedicate a day to public participation in the welfare of the armed forces community. Small flag symbols and contribution campaigns became a familiar part of the day, linking remembrance with practical assistance. Funds raised through the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund support welfare, rehabilitation and related programmes for ex-servicemen, war widows and dependants. The day therefore carries two connected messages: gratitude to those who serve under difficult and dangerous conditions, and a civic responsibility to support families whose lives have been shaped by military service.
Why it matters
Armed Forces Flag Day helps remember an important person, institution, event or public value in India.
