Children's Day

Children's Day in India is observed on 14 November, the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India's first Prime Minister. Nehru repeatedly argued that the country's future depended on the education, health and opportunities given to children, and his public image became closely associated with young people. He supported the creation of institutions for science, education and child welfare and was popularly remembered by generations of schoolchildren as 'Chacha Nehru'. The date became India's established Children's Day after his lifetime and is used to focus attention on childhood as a period requiring care, learning, play and protection. Schools often celebrate with cultural programmes, games and activities led for children rather than ordinary lessons. Beyond the festive atmosphere, the day draws attention to the continuing responsibilities of society toward nutrition, education, safety and equal opportunity for every child.
