Papmochani Ekadashi

Papmochani Ekadashi is associated with the story of Sage Medhavi and the celestial nymph Manjughosha. Medhavi was engaged in deep austerity when Manjughosha, sent into the forest, attracted his attention with music and beauty. The sage gradually abandoned his discipline and remained absorbed in the relationship for a long time, only later realising how much time had passed. In anger he cursed Manjughosha, but after reflection both sought a way to overcome the consequences of their actions. The traditional katha directs them toward the observance of Papmochani Ekadashi, through which purification and release from the curse are obtained. The story is not simply about blaming temptation; it shows how loss of awareness can pull even a disciplined person away from a chosen path, and how anger can create a second mistake after the first. The vrata therefore emphasises self-control, repentance, forgiveness and renewed devotion to Vishnu.

The last ekadashi of the lunar year, and the name says its work: the releasing of wrongdoing before the year turns at Chaitra.
