In short
Dev Diwali is a festival observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.
The story
Dev Diwali, or Dev Deepawali, is celebrated on Kartik Purnima and is especially famous in Varanasi, where ghats along the Ganga are illuminated with vast numbers of lamps. A prominent Shaiva tradition associates the full-moon day with Lord Shiva's victory over the three fortified cities of the demons collectively called Tripurasura, earning Shiva the name Tripurari. The lighting of lamps is imagined as a celebration by the gods themselves, which gives the festival its name, ‘Diwali of the deities.’ Devotees take an early sacred bath, worship Shiva and other deities, offer lamps to the Ganga and remember ancestors. In Varanasi the evening aarti and illuminated riverfront transform the observance into a major public festival, joining the symbolism of light with gratitude, purification and divine victory.
Why it matters
Dev Diwali is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.
