In short
Kalabhairav Jayanti is a Jayanti observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.
The story
Kalabhairav Jayanti, also called Bhairava Ashtami, honours the fierce protective form of Lord Shiva known as Kala Bhairava. Puranic traditions tell that Bhairava manifested when pride and disorder had to be restrained; one famous narrative connects him with the humbling of Brahma's arrogance and with the deeper truth that even creation is subject to time. ‘Kala’ means time as well as death, and Bhairava is therefore revered as the guardian who reminds devotees of life's impermanence and the need for discipline. In sacred cities such as Kashi, Kala Bhairava is regarded as a powerful kshetrapala, or protector of the holy area. Devotees visit Bhairava temples, offer lamps and prayers, recite his names and seek courage, protection and freedom from fear.
Why it matters
Kalabhairav Jayanti is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.
What people do
