Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth is a marriage-focused vrat observed especially in North and north-western India. One widely narrated katha tells of Veeravati, a devoted wife whose seven brothers could not bear to see her weakened by a strict fast. They created the appearance of moonrise so that she would break the fast early; when misfortune followed, she learned that the vow had been interrupted and undertook it again with complete devotion, eventually restoring her husband's life and well-being. Other regions tell related stories of loyal wives whose courage protects their families, so the central theme is steadfast commitment rather than a single universal legend. Women traditionally observe a day-long fast, worship Shiva-Parvati or Gauri, listen to the vrat-katha and, after sighting the moon, offer water before ending the fast.

Karwa Chauth is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

Nirjala, without water, from before sunrise until the moon is seen. Sargi is eaten before dawn, and the fast is broken only after the arghya and the sieve.
