The story
Small boats made of banana leaf, with a candle, three sticks of incense and a coin, are floated on the full moon of the twelfth Thai month - an apology to the water for the year's use of it, and a way of setting down a grudge with it. Thai lunar reckoning, which this app does not compute.

Why it matters
A small float of banana leaf, a candle, three incense sticks and a coin, set on the water on the full moon of the twelfth month. It carries off the year's ill luck and is an apology to the water - to Phra Mae Khongkha - for a year of using and fouling it.
What people do
The krathong is set on the river after dark, often with a nail clipping or a strand of hair in it so that something of you goes with it. Chiang Mai keeps Yi Peng on the same nights, when paper lanterns are released into the sky. Banana leaf is used because it does not stay.

Thailand throughout, and in Chiang Mai kept together with the Lanna festival of Yi Peng, where the lanterns go up into the sky as the krathong go down the river. Related observances are kept in Laos as Boun That Luang and in Myanmar as Tazaungdaing.
