Mahalakshmi Vrat

Mahalakshmi Vrat is a multi-day observance devoted to Goddess Mahalakshmi and traditionally begins on Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami. The vrata extends for about sixteen days, although the exact count can shift when lunar tithis are repeated or omitted. A traditional katha speaks of a royal household and the restoration of fortune through sincere Lakshmi worship, placing the emphasis on disciplined devotion rather than sudden wealth. Women in several North and central Indian traditions undertake the vow for family prosperity, stability and well-being, tying sacred threads, worshipping the Goddess and maintaining prescribed food discipline according to family custom. The length of the observance is itself significant: prosperity is approached as something sustained by patience, order, gratitude and repeated effort. The vrat concludes around Ashwin Krishna Ashtami with prayer and the formal completion of the vow.
