National Panchayati Raj Day

National Panchayati Raj Day is observed on 24 April because the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act came into force on 24 April 1993. The amendment gave constitutional status to Panchayati Raj institutions and created a more consistent framework for elected local self-government in rural India. It provided for Gram Sabhas, regular elections, reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women, State Finance Commissions and a three-tier structure in most states. The reform did not create village councils from nothing—India had long traditions and earlier laws of local governance—but it gave democratic decentralisation a stronger constitutional foundation. The day highlights the idea that decisions about roads, water, sanitation, local development and community priorities should involve elected bodies close to the people affected. It also provides an occasion to assess whether local institutions have the finance, authority and participation needed to function effectively.
