Ambedkar Jayanti

Ambedkar Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, born on 14 April 1891 at Mhow in present-day Madhya Pradesh. Born into a community subjected to severe caste discrimination, Ambedkar pursued higher education in India, the United States and Britain and became a jurist, economist, social reformer and political leader. He devoted much of his life to challenging untouchability and unequal social structures and argued that political democracy required liberty, equality and fraternity in social life as well. After independence he served as India’s first Law Minister and chaired the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, playing a central role in shaping the Constitution of India. The anniversary is observed through tributes, public meetings, educational programmes and visits to memorials. For many people it is not merely a birthday remembrance but a day to reflect on constitutional rights, education, dignity and social equality.
