The story
Indian Army Day is observed on 15 January in memory of a defining moment in the country's military history. On 15 January 1949, General K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, completing an important transition of military leadership after independence. Cariappa had already played a major role in the army during the 1947–48 conflict in Jammu and Kashmir and later became one of the most respected figures in Indian military tradition. Army Day honours not only that transfer of command but generations of soldiers who serve in war, counter-insurgency, disaster relief, peacekeeping and difficult frontier conditions. Ceremonial parades, honours and displays of military capability connect institutional history with remembrance of sacrifice and service.
