Open the day's panchang

In short

The Bhil gathering of southern Rajasthan, on a sandbar where two rivers meet.

The story

Baneshwar is a linga on an island of sand at the confluence of the Som and the Mahi in Dungarpur, and it is broken - the name is from ban, the fragment. For five days to Magh Purnima the Bhil families of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh camp on the sand. There is a Vishnu temple beside the Shiva one, so the fair is two fairs held together, and it has been for as long as anyone has written about it.

Why it matters

The largest Adivasi gathering in Rajasthan, and one where the religion, the market and the meeting of families spread over three states are the same event.
