Bathukamma

Bathukamma is Telangana’s great floral festival, centred on Goddess Gauri and on the close relationship between women, seasonal flowers, water and the agricultural landscape. For nine days, women arrange locally available flowers in rising circular tiers to form a colourful Bathukamma, gather in groups, sing folk songs and move around the floral arrangement in rhythmic circles. The celebration reaches its height on Saddula Bathukamma, when the decorated flowers are carried in procession and immersed in a pond or other water body. Telangana traditions connect the festival with Gauri, fertility, well-being and the renewal of life after the monsoon. Because the flowers, songs and community gatherings are rooted in the local environment, Bathukamma has also become a strong symbol of Telangana identity and of women’s role in preserving shared cultural memory.

Bathukamma is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

The stack is built on a brass plate in layers, tallest on the ninth day, Saddula Bathukamma. Women in silk gather at dusk, circle it and clap in time, and the songs are sung in call and answer. At the end it goes into the tank, and the flowers go back into the water they came from.

Telangana almost alone, and strongest in the districts around Warangal and Karimnagar. The nine days run alongside Navratri and end the day before Durgashtami, so a household may keep both.
