Bihar Diwas

Bihar Diwas is observed on 22 March because on that date in 1912 the province of Bihar and Orissa was separated from the Bengal Presidency under British rule. Before that reorganisation, much of present-day Bihar had long been administered as part of Bengal despite its own linguistic, historical and regional identity. The new province was another stage rather than the final map: Orissa became a separate province in 1936, and after independence Bihar’s boundaries changed again, most notably when Jharkhand was created in 2000. Modern Bihar Diwas uses the 1912 milestone to celebrate a much older civilisation whose history includes Magadha, ancient universities such as Nalanda, Buddhist and Jain sacred geography and important movements in modern India. State events commonly highlight Bihari languages, folk arts, music, food, education and public achievement. The day connects institutional history with a broader sense of regional identity and pride.
