Bol Choth

Bol Choth is a Gujarati observance centred on reverence for the cow and calf and is kept shortly before Nag Panchami and the Janmashtami season. Married women traditionally worship a cow with her calf and pray for the health and protection of children and family. A popular folk katha warns against carelessness toward the calf: through a misunderstanding or negligence, harm comes to a young calf, causing grief and repentance in the household; sincere worship and recognition of the mistake restore well-being. The details of the story differ in oral retellings, but the ethical centre remains respect for animal life, maternal care and responsibility. Many households avoid foods prepared from certain grains or avoid using cow's milk products according to family custom, while simple foods are eaten after worship.
