The one week of the year the Dangs' five rajas are paid, and the durbar is held in public.
The story
The Dangs were never annexed. In 1842 the British leased the forests from the Bhil rajas and naiks who held them and agreed to pay them for it, and that payment - the salyani - has been made every year since, by the Government of India after 1947. It is handed over at Ahwa in the days before Holi, in an open durbar with the rajas seated, and around it has grown a fair: Warli, Bhil and Kunbi dance, a market, and the whole district in town.
Why it matters
A colonial ledger entry that turned into a festival, and one of the few places in India where an old sovereignty is still formally, annually acknowledged in cash.
