In short
Durva Ganapati Chaturthi is a vrat observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.
The story
Durva Ganapati Chaturthi places special emphasis on offering sacred durva grass to Lord Ganesha. Hindu tradition repeatedly associates the three-bladed grass with Ganesha, and a popular legend explains that after he subdued the fiery demon Analasura by swallowing him, intense heat filled his body. Various divine remedies failed until sages offered cool durva grass, which soothed him; the plant then became one of his most beloved offerings. On this Chaturthi devotees prepare clean bunches of durva, often in traditional counts, and offer them with Ganesha's names, lamps, flowers and sweets. The small, hardy grass also symbolizes resilience and renewed growth. The vrata therefore combines a distinctive ritual offering with the broader Chaturthi prayer for wisdom, removal of obstacles and steadiness in difficult circumstances.
Why it matters
Durva Ganapati Chaturthi is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.
