In short

Gudi Padwa is a festival observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.

The story

Gudi Padwa marks the first day of Chaitra and is celebrated most prominently as the Marathi New Year. Several traditions explain its sacred meaning. One recalls Brahma beginning creation and the ordering of time on this day; another associates the raised gudi with victory and with Rama’s triumphant return to Ayodhya. Historical memory in Maharashtra also connects the gudi with victory standards and the Shalivahana era. Families clean and decorate their homes, draw rangoli and raise a gudi—a bright cloth on a bamboo pole, decorated with neem or mango leaves, flowers and an inverted metal vessel. Neem and sweet ingredients are often eaten together, symbolizing life’s mixture of bitter and pleasant experiences. The festival arrives with spring and the rabi harvest, so its themes combine new year, renewal, prosperity, courage and gratitude for nature’s fresh cycle.

Retold from the Gujarati household practice

Why it matters

Gudi Padwa is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

What people do

A bamboo pole is put up at a window or a doorway with a bright cloth tied to it, a garland of neem and mango leaves, sugar crystals and an inverted metal pot on top. Neem leaves are eaten with jaggery before anything else - bitter first, on the argument that a year taken whole is easier than a year taken sweet.

Told differently elsewhere

Maharashtra and Goa raise the gudi; Karnataka and Andhra keep the same day as Ugadi with the six-taste pachadi; Sindhis keep Cheti Chand. Gujarat does not begin its year here at all - it waits for Kartik.
