Janmashtami

Janmashtami tells the story of Krishna's birth during the rule of Kansa, king of Mathura. A prophecy warned Kansa that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would bring about his death. Frightened, he imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudeva and killed their newborn children. When the eighth child, Krishna, was born at midnight, the prison bonds and doors were miraculously released. Vasudeva carried the infant across the flooded Yamuna to Gokul, where he exchanged Krishna with the newborn daughter of Nanda and Yashoda. When Kansa tried to kill the girl, she revealed herself as a divine power and warned that the child destined to defeat him was already safe. Krishna then grew up among the cowherds of Gokul and Vrindavan before eventually confronting Kansa. Janmashtami remembers this birth as the arrival of divine protection and dharma in a time of fear and oppression.

Janmashtami is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

Many keep a fast through the day and break it at midnight, the hour of the birth. Temples hold darshan at that moment. Pots of curd and butter are hung high to be broken by teams climbing on one another's shoulders, a game named for the butter Krishna is said to have stolen.

Dahi handi in Maharashtra and Gujarat, with human pyramids climbing to a pot hung across a street. Mathura and Vrindavan keep it as the birthplace. Gokulashtami in the south, with kolam footprints drawn from the door inward. Manipur keeps it with the Raslila. In Gujarat it is also the last day of the Janmashtami fair at Dwarka.
