Kargil Vijay Diwas

Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed on 26 July to remember India's military victory in the 1999 Kargil conflict and to honour the soldiers who died in the campaign. During the spring of 1999, infiltrating forces occupied high-altitude positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control in the Kargil sector of Ladakh. Indian forces launched Operation Vijay to regain the posts, fighting in exceptionally difficult mountain terrain where altitude, steep slopes and exposed approaches made every assault costly. By late July the occupied positions had been recovered, and 26 July became the official day of commemoration. Ceremonies at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras and across the armed forces recall individual units and soldiers who fought in the operation. The day is both a military remembrance and a reminder of the human cost of defending remote frontiers.
