Kumbh Mela

Maha Kumbh ; Ardh Kumbh

No rule yet

Nobody has written a rule for this observance yet, so the calendar does not put it on a day. A name with a made-up date beside it would be worse than a name on its own.

In short

The largest gathering of people on earth, at four rivers in turn, on a cycle Jupiter sets.

The story

When the ocean was churned, the pot of amrit was carried away and four drops fell - at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. Each is a Kumbh site and each takes its turn on a roughly twelve-year cycle, the exact years fixed by the sign Jupiter stands in and the sign the sun stands in. The bathing days are the shahi snans, when the akharas go into the water first and everyone else follows.

Why it matters

No other observance in any tradition moves this many people. What is being kept is a place and an hour rather than a story.

Told differently elsewhere

This app does not yet compute the Kumbh year. The rule needs a Jupiter-and-sun cycle that `festival_rule` has no column for, so the entry carries no date rather than a wrong one.
