International Workers' Day

International Workers’ Day, widely called May Day or Labour Day, is observed on 1 May in many countries. Its modern history is closely tied to the nineteenth-century campaign for an eight-hour working day. In the United States, large labour demonstrations were organized in May 1886, and events surrounding the Haymarket affair in Chicago became an enduring symbol of the struggle over working hours and labour rights. In 1889, the Second International called for demonstrations on 1 May in support of the eight-hour day, helping establish the date as an international workers’ observance. Over time, May Day came to represent broader concerns including fair wages, safe workplaces, social protection, collective bargaining and dignity at work. Trade unions, worker organizations and public institutions mark the day in different ways, from rallies and speeches to cultural programmes and recognition of the contribution of workers to society and the economy.

International Workers' Day is intended to build public awareness and encourage attention to its associated global issue.
