The story
Maharashtra Day commemorates the creation of the state of Maharashtra on 1 May 1960. After independence, the bilingual Bombay State included large Marathi- and Gujarati-speaking areas. A powerful Samyukta Maharashtra movement campaigned for a Marathi-speaking state, while a parallel movement sought a separate Gujarati-speaking state. The Bombay Reorganisation Act divided the old state, and Maharashtra and Gujarat formally came into existence on 1 May 1960. Mumbai became the capital of Maharashtra. The day therefore carries memories of the linguistic reorganisation of India and of those who participated in the statehood movement. Official celebrations include flag-hoisting, parades and cultural programmes, while public events highlight Marathi language, literature, theatre, folk traditions and the state's social and economic achievements. Because 1 May is also International Workers' Day, the date often carries both state-formation and labour-related significance.
