Martyrs' Day

Martyrs' Day on 30 January is primarily associated with the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated in New Delhi on 30 January 1948. Gandhi had spent his final months working against communal violence that followed Partition and advocating reconciliation among religious communities. His killing shocked the newly independent country and made the date a national occasion of mourning and remembrance. Official ceremonies at Raj Ghat honour Gandhi, while a two-minute silence is traditionally observed to remember people who gave their lives in India's freedom struggle and national service. The day is therefore broader than the biography of one leader: Gandhi's death provides the date, but the observance has become a moment to remember sacrifice and to reflect on non-violence, communal harmony and the cost of political hatred.
