Mauni Amavasya

Mauni Amavasya is the new-moon day of Magha and one of the most important sacred-bathing dates of the Magha pilgrimage season. Its name is commonly linked with mauna—intentional silence—and the day invites devotees to reduce speech, turn inward and combine bathing, prayer, charity and ancestral remembrance. At Prayagraj, Mauni Amavasya is among the great bathing days of the Magh Mela and Kumbh tradition, when large numbers of pilgrims enter the Triveni Sangam before dawn. Some traditions also connect the name with Manu, but silence and self-restraint are the clearest living features of the observance. Devotees may keep partial or complete silence, offer water and sesame to ancestors, give food or clothing in charity and spend time in japa and meditation. The dark moon becomes a symbol for quiet reflection before spiritual renewal.
