Open the day's panchang

In short

Narali Purnima is a full-moon observance observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.

The story

Narali Purnima is the Shravan full-moon festival of the fishing communities along Maharashtra’s Konkan coast and neighbouring western shores. After the rough monsoon period, the sea traditionally becomes safer for renewed fishing activity, so families honour Varuna, deity of waters, and pray for protection before returning to the open sea. Decorated coconuts—the ‘naral’ that gives the festival its name—are carried to the shore and offered to the waves along with prayer, flowers and other simple offerings. Boats may be cleaned, decorated and blessed, while homes prepare coconut-based sweets and festive rice dishes. The day falls with Raksha Bandhan, so coastal families may observe both traditions together. Narali Purnima turns the practical rhythm of maritime livelihood into a sacred thanksgiving: the ocean is respected not merely as a source of income but as a powerful natural presence on which the safety and prosperity of fishing communities depend.

Why it matters

Narali Purnima is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

What people do

A decorated coconut is offered to the water by the boat owners, with the whole village at the shore. The boats are painted and garlanded beforehand. Narali bhat - coconut and jaggery rice - is cooked, and the season's first catch is landed the next day.

Told differently elsewhere

The Koli and fishing communities of Mumbai, coastal Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. The same full moon is Raksha Bandhan inland, Nariyali Purnima in Gujarat's coastal towns, and Avani Avittam in the south, and one household can be keeping all of them.
