National Doctors' Day

National Doctors' Day in India is observed on 1 July in honour of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a physician, public leader and former Chief Minister of West Bengal who was born on 1 July 1882 and died on the same date in 1962. Roy trained in medicine in India and Britain and became known both for clinical service and for helping build medical and civic institutions. His public life linked health care with administration, education and urban development. The day was adopted as a way to recognise the contribution of doctors and the wider responsibilities of the medical profession. Hospitals, medical colleges and professional associations use it to discuss patient care, ethics, public health and the pressures faced by health workers.
