National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day is observed on 7 August to honour India's weavers and the handloom traditions that combine livelihood, craft knowledge and regional identity. The date was chosen because the Swadeshi Movement was formally launched at a large meeting in Calcutta on 7 August 1905 during the protest against the partition of Bengal. Swadeshi encouraged Indians to reject imported goods and strengthen domestic production, giving hand-spun and hand-woven textiles an important place in the freedom movement. The Government of India declared 7 August National Handloom Day in 2015, and the first national celebration was held in Chennai. Today's observance highlights master weavers, traditional techniques, design innovation, market access and the economic challenges faced by weaving communities. From Patola and Kanchipuram to Jamdani, Chanderi and many local weaves, the day connects living craftsmanship with a history of self-reliance.
