National Press Day

National Press Day is observed on 16 November to mark the day the Press Council of India began functioning in 1966. The Council was conceived as an independent statutory body intended to preserve the freedom of the press while also promoting professional standards and responsibility in journalism. This dual purpose reflects a recurring tension in democratic public life: the press must be able to investigate and criticise power without improper interference, but credibility also depends on accuracy, fairness and ethical conduct. The Press Council was later re-established under the Press Council Act, 1978 after an interruption during the Emergency period. National Press Day is used by journalists, media institutions and public bodies for discussions on press freedom, misinformation, ethics, technology and the changing economics of news. The date therefore celebrates neither government nor any particular newspaper; it highlights the role of an independent and accountable press in democracy.
