National Technology Day is observed on 11 May because several major Indian technological events occurred on that date in 1998. India conducted a set of underground nuclear tests at Pokhran, the indigenous Hansa-3 aircraft was test-flown in Bengaluru, and a successful test of the Trishul missile was also associated with the day. The Government subsequently chose 11 May as National Technology Day and began annual observances in 1999. While the historical origin lies in these strategic and aerospace milestones, the day has broadened to recognise innovation across civilian technology, research, industry and entrepreneurship. Awards, exhibitions and discussions highlight the path from scientific ideas to usable products and systems. Its wider message is that technology matters not simply when a prototype succeeds, but when research is translated responsibly into solutions that improve capability, productivity, safety and everyday life.
