The story
Radha Ashtami celebrates the appearance of Shri Radha, revered in Vaishnava traditions as Krishna's foremost devotee and the embodiment of selfless divine love. Traditions of Braj identify Barsana and the surrounding region especially strongly with Radha; temples there celebrate the day with abhisheka, decorated shrines, kirtan and readings about Radha and Krishna. Devotional literature describes Radha-bhava as love that seeks no reward and exists entirely for the beloved, which is why the festival is as much about the ideal of bhakti as about a birth anniversary. It occurs fifteen days after Janmashtami in Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami. Devotees worship Radha together with Krishna and remember the Braj lilas through songs, mantra and temple festivities.
