Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is built around the ancient idea of a sacred protective thread, and several traditions explain its meaning. In the Bhavishya Purana-associated account, during a long conflict between the devas and asuras, Brihaspati prescribed a protective rite and Indra's wife Shachi tied a consecrated thread on Indra before battle. Other popular traditions connect the day with Lakshmi and King Bali, and later social custom made the rakhi especially a symbol of affection and responsibility between sisters and brothers. On Shravan Purnima, a sister traditionally ties rakhi on her brother's wrist, applies tilak and offers sweets, while the brother responds with a gift and a promise of care; many families now understand that protection as mutual rather than one-sided. Priests and communities in some regions also tie protective threads in religious ceremonies. The festival therefore combines family affection with the older symbolism of blessing, responsibility and protection.

Raksha Bandhan is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

A sister ties the rakhi on her brother's right wrist, puts a tilak on his forehead and feeds him something sweet; he gives her a gift and, in the older form of the words, a promise. It is not only for brothers by birth. The same day is Nariyeli Poonam on the Gujarat coast, when a coconut is given to the sea and the boats go out again.

Kept most strongly across the north and west. Narali Purnima on the Konkan coast; Avani Avittam in the south, when the sacred thread is changed. Bengal keeps Jhulan Purnima with Radha and Krishna in a swing. The rakhi has widened well past siblings by blood, which is a change within living memory rather than an old regional difference.
