Republic Day

Republic Day marks 26 January 1950, when the Constitution of India came into force and India became a sovereign democratic republic governed by its own constitutional framework. The Constitution had been adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 after extensive debate, but 26 January was chosen for commencement because the freedom movement had observed that date in 1930 as Purna Swaraj Day, declaring complete independence as its goal. Dr. Rajendra Prasad took office as the first President of the Republic, replacing the constitutional role of the British monarch. The national celebration in New Delhi combines the ceremonial authority of the state with a display of India’s armed forces, cultural diversity and public achievements, while awards and tributes honour service and bravery. Republic Day differs from Independence Day: 15 August remembers freedom from colonial rule, whereas 26 January celebrates the constitutional order through which citizens and institutions exercise that freedom.
