Sakat Chauth

Sakat Chauth, also called Sankat Chauth or Tilkut Chauth, is a Magha-month vrata dedicated mainly to Ganesha and observed for the welfare of children. A widely told North Indian katha speaks of two sisters-in-law, one prosperous and one poor, whose devotion and generosity are tested. Other versions center on a mother whose sincere worship of Ganesha protects her child from danger. Despite differences in narration, the recurring theme is 'sankat'—difficulty or danger—and the faith that Ganesha removes obstacles when worship is joined with humility and care for family. Sesame is especially important in this winter observance; til sweets and til-based offerings are prepared, which explains the name Tilkut Chauth. Mothers often keep a strict fast and worship Ganesha before offering arghya to the moon, praying for their children's health, safety and long life.
