The story
Shani Jayanti commemorates the birth of Shani, the planetary deity associated with karma, discipline and the consequences of action. Puranic traditions describe Shani as a son of Surya and Chhaya. A popular birth account says Chhaya remained deeply absorbed in Shiva worship during pregnancy, and Shani was born with an intense, austere nature. Later stories describe tension between Shani and Surya and Shani’s severe penance to Shiva, after which he received an important place among the Navagrahas. Unlike the idea of Shani as simply a bringer of misfortune, devotional tradition treats him as a stern dispenser of justice whose influence teaches patience, responsibility and humility. On Shani Jayanti devotees visit Shani or Navagraha shrines, offer sesame oil, black sesame or lamps, recite Shani stotra and Hanuman prayers, give charity and reflect on correcting conduct rather than merely seeking escape from consequences.
