Shitala Satam

Shitala Satam is one of Gujarat’s distinctive household festivals dedicated to Goddess Shitala, whose very name evokes coolness. In traditional belief she protects families from fever and eruptive diseases, memories that gave the Goddess deep importance in an era before modern vaccination and medicine. The defining ritual is that no fresh food is cooked on Shitala Satam. On the previous day, Randhan Chhath, the family prepares food and then allows the hearth to become cold. On Satam morning devotees worship Shitala Mata, often at a local shrine, and offer the previously cooked food before sharing it as prasad. The contrast between fire on the cooking day and a cool stove on the worship day gives the festival its character. Today the observance remains a strong Gujarati expression of family health, maternal protection, inherited food traditions and respect for the cooling form of the Goddess.

Shitala Satam is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

Yesterday's food is eaten cold. Women bathe before dawn, visit the Shitala shrine and offer cold water, curd and the food kept from Randhan Chhath. Children are taken along. Nothing is heated in the house until the following morning.
