Teachers' Day

Teachers' Day in India is observed on 5 September, the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, philosopher, teacher and the country's second President. Born in 1888, Radhakrishnan taught philosophy at several universities and became known internationally for writing and lecturing on Indian thought and comparative religion. When admirers wished to celebrate his birthday after he became President, the tradition remembers that he suggested the occasion would be more meaningful if it honoured teachers instead. The first Teachers' Day was observed in 1962, the year he assumed the presidency. Schools and colleges now mark the day with student performances, appreciation ceremonies and discussions about education. Radhakrishnan gives the date its historical identity, but the day's broader purpose is to recognise the patient, often unseen work through which teachers build knowledge, confidence and judgement across generations.
