In short

Telangana Formation Day marks the creation of Telangana as a separate state on 2 June 2014 under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. The Telangana region had earlier formed part of the former Hyderabad State and was merged with Andhra State in 1956 to create Andhra Pradesh.

The story

Telangana Formation Day marks the creation of Telangana as a separate state on 2 June 2014 under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. The Telangana region had earlier formed part of the former Hyderabad State and was merged with Andhra State in 1956 to create Andhra Pradesh. Over subsequent decades, movements for a separate Telangana raised concerns about regional representation, resources, employment and cultural identity. After a prolonged political process and mass movement, Parliament approved reorganisation and Telangana came into existence with Hyderabad as its capital at formation. The day remembers the statehood struggle and the people who participated in it, while also celebrating Telangana's language, literature, folk traditions and regional heritage. Official programmes generally include flag-hoisting, tributes, cultural performances and events across districts that reflect on the state's journey and future development.

Why it matters

Telangana Formation Day helps remember an important person, institution, event or public value in India.
