Tulsidas Jayanti

Tulsidas Jayanti remembers Goswami Tulsidas, the poet-saint whose Ramcharitmanas brought the story and devotion of Rama into a form accessible to millions of North Indian households. Writing mainly in Awadhi rather than limiting the work to classical Sanskrit, Tulsidas retold the Ramayana with a strong emphasis on bhakti, ethical living, humility and the saving power of the divine name. Tradition connects his life deeply with Varanasi, Ayodhya, Chitrakoot and Hanuman devotion, and several stories describe Hanuman guiding him toward a vision of Lord Rama. His other works, including the Vinaya Patrika and Hanuman Chalisa traditionally attributed to him, became central to popular devotional culture. On his Jayanti, devotees read passages from the Ramcharitmanas, recite Rama and Hanuman prayers, hold satsang and honour literature that made philosophy and devotion part of everyday language.

Tulsidas Jayanti is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

The Ramcharitmanas is read, in a nine-day path or in the whole day's akhand path. The Hanuman Chalisa, which is his, is read everywhere including where the day itself is not kept. Ayodhya, Varanasi and Chitrakoot hold the largest of it.
