The story
Vivah Panchami commemorates the wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. In the Ramayana, King Janaka announces that Sita will marry the prince capable of handling the great bow of Shiva kept in Mithila. Rama, visiting Mithila with Sage Vishvamitra and Lakshmana, lifts and breaks the bow, demonstrating the destiny that brings the two families together. King Dasharatha is invited, and the wedding of Rama and Sita is celebrated along with the marriages of their siblings, linking the houses of Ayodhya and Mithila. On Margashirsha Shukla Panchami, temples and communities—especially in Janakpur, Mithila and places devoted to Rama—reenact the wedding with processions, songs and ceremonial marriage rites. The festival celebrates companionship founded on dharma, mutual respect and sacred responsibility.
