In short

World Cancer Day is an international awareness or commemorative observance and is optional in the calendar.

The story

World Cancer Day is observed on 4 February to bring governments, health professionals, communities and individuals together around cancer prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and care. The date is linked to the Charter of Paris Against Cancer, signed on 4 February 2000 at an international summit in Paris; the charter called for stronger research, better patient care and wider cooperation against cancer. The Union for International Cancer Control later developed the day into a major global campaign. Its message has broadened as knowledge of cancer has advanced: many cancers can be prevented by reducing known risks, vaccination can prevent some infection-related cancers, screening and early detection can improve outcomes, and access to timely diagnosis and treatment remains deeply unequal between and within countries. World Cancer Day therefore combines awareness with advocacy, remembrance and support for patients, survivors, families, caregivers and researchers, while challenging misinformation and stigma surrounding the disease.

Why it matters

World Cancer Day is intended to build public awareness and encourage attention to its associated global issue.
