What is a birth tithi?
The lunar day you were born on, counted by how far the moon has moved from the sun. Many families keep a birthday, a shraddh or a death anniversary on the tithi rather than on the English date.
Why the date moves every year
Twelve lunar months are about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so the same tithi lands on a different English date each year. Every two or three years a leap month (adhik maas) is added, and the date moves back by about a month.
Why the time of birth matters
A tithi does not begin at sunrise or at midnight. It can begin at any hour, so on the day you were born the tithi may have changed. The tithi running at your time of birth is your birth tithi.
Questions people ask
What if my tithi is not at any sunrise one year?
Sometimes a tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next. It is then kept on the day it falls in, and the list shows that day.
What if I was born in an adhik maas?
The leap month comes only every two or three years. In the other years the birthday is kept in the regular month of the same name.
Why does my family's panchang name a different month?
In the dark fortnight, a purnimanta panchang, used in much of north India, already names the next month. The tithi and the day are the same. This page counts months as Gujarat does, ending at amas, and gives the other name too.
