Andhra Pradesh Formation Day

Andhra Pradesh Formation Day recalls the creation of Andhra Pradesh on 1 November 1956 during the nationwide reorganisation of Indian states largely along linguistic lines. An Andhra State for Telugu-speaking areas had already been formed in 1953 from the former Madras State after a long movement for linguistic self-government. The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 then brought that Andhra State together with the Telugu-speaking Telangana region of the former Hyderabad State to form Andhra Pradesh, with Hyderabad as its capital. The arrangement later became the subject of political movements over regional development and representation, and on 2 June 2014 Telangana became a separate state under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. Thus 1 November represents an important earlier stage in the political history of Telugu-speaking India. Formation-day observances focus on the state’s language, literature, arts, public institutions and the generations that contributed to its development.
