In short
Bachha Baras is a vrat observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.
The story
Bachha Baras is Gujarat's form of Govatsa Dwadashi, a pre-Diwali observance devoted to the cow and especially the cow with her calf. In agrarian life, cattle provided milk, helped sustain the household and supported farming, so honouring them became both a religious and practical expression of gratitude. Women worship a cow and calf, or their symbolic images when animals are not available, offer food and pray for the well-being of children and family. The name 'Bachha' itself points to the calf and reinforces the day’s association with motherhood, nourishment and protection of offspring. In many communities foods made from cow's milk or certain grains are avoided for the day as part of the vrata. The observance opens the Gujarati Diwali sequence by acknowledging the animals and sources of sustenance on which household prosperity depends.
Why it matters
Bachha Baras is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.
Fasting
Wheat and knife-cut food are given up for the day, not food itself. What is eaten is bajra or juwar rotla and vegetables broken by hand.
