Constitution Day

Constitution Day, or Samvidhan Divas, is observed on 26 November because the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India on that date in 1949. The document was the outcome of nearly three years of debate by representatives working through questions of federalism, fundamental rights, minority protections, democratic institutions and social transformation after colonial rule and Partition. Dr B. R. Ambedkar, as chairman of the Drafting Committee, played a central role, alongside many other members of the Assembly. The Constitution came into force later, on 26 January 1950, but 26 November honours the act of adoption itself. The Government began formally observing the date as Constitution Day in 2015. Readings of the Preamble and public discussions use the day to reconnect constitutional text with everyday citizenship—justice, liberty, equality, fraternity and the responsibilities required to sustain democratic institutions.
