Dahi Handi

Dahi Handi transforms one of the most loved stories of Krishna's childhood into a vigorous public celebration. Krishna of Gokul is remembered as Makhan Chor, the playful child who loved butter and curd and would reach pots hung high by householders, often with the help of his friends. The modern festival recreates that image through teams of Govindas who form human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot suspended above the street. It is usually celebrated the day after Janmashtami and is especially prominent in Maharashtra. The spectacle requires coordination, trust and careful support at every level of the pyramid, turning a mischievous childhood lila into a demonstration of teamwork. Songs, drums and Krishna chants surround the event, while the underlying devotional mood remembers the intimate, joyful relationship between the people of Gokul and their beloved Krishna.
