Divaso

Divaso is a distinct Gujarati observance on Ashadha Amavasya, just before the beginning of Shravan in the Gujarati calendar. It is closely associated with the domestic Evrat-Jivrat tradition observed by married women and with worship of Parvati for family well-being. One explanation of the name connects it with 'Deep Vaso'—the dwelling or continuous presence of a lamp. In some households a ghee lamp is kept burning for an extended period beside sprouted javara, which represent fertility, renewal and the life-giving monsoon season. Women pray for the health and prosperity of the household and share sweets or simple offerings with relatives and neighbours. Divaso therefore acts as a threshold between Ashadha and the sacred month of Shravan. Rather than being built around one pan-Indian myth, it preserves a regional Gujarati rhythm of monsoon, household devotion, women's vrat practice and preparation for the dense sequence of Shravan festivals that follows.

Divaso is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

Kuler - wheat flour, ghee and jaggery - is made and offered to the ancestors, and the day is kept quietly. In many houses it is the last day anything is fried until the fast days of Shravan are over.
