The story
Earth Day grew out of the modern environmental movement that gathered strength in the late 1960s. In the United States, Senator Gaylord Nelson promoted a nationwide environmental teach-in, and organizer Denis Hayes helped coordinate the first Earth Day on 22 April 1970, when millions of people took part in events calling attention to polluted air and water, pesticides, habitat loss and other environmental concerns. The observance later spread internationally and became a broad civic occasion for environmental education and action. The United Nations separately designated 22 April as International Mother Earth Day in 2009, linking the date with the idea that human well-being depends on healthy ecosystems. Today the day is used to discuss climate change, biodiversity, pollution, conservation and practical ways individuals, communities, institutions and governments can protect the planet.
