The story
Ganga Dussehra commemorates the descent of the sacred river Ganga from heaven to earth, a story centred on King Bhagiratha’s extraordinary perseverance. According to the traditional narrative, the ashes of Bhagiratha’s ancestors could be purified only by the touch of Ganga. He therefore undertook severe tapas until the celestial river agreed to descend. Because her force would have shattered the earth, Bhagiratha then worshipped Shiva, who received the rushing waters in his matted hair and released them gently in streams. Ganga finally followed Bhagiratha to the place where his ancestors awaited liberation. The festival’s name is commonly linked with the removal of ten kinds of wrongdoing, and devotees honour the river through bathing, Ganga worship, lamps, charity and prayer. Beyond the legend, the day expresses a wider Hindu understanding of rivers as sources of life, purification, pilgrimage and continuity between generations.

What people do
A bath in the Ganga where it is reachable, and in any river where it is not, with ten of everything - ten lamps, ten flowers, ten dips. Haridwar, Varanasi and Prayag are full. Water is given away, and in the north a pot of it is kept at home from the day.

Largest along the river itself - Haridwar, Rishikesh, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Patna - and kept as a bathing day rather than a festival elsewhere. Not to be confused with the Dussehra of Ashwin, which is a different word doing different work.
