Gyan Panchami

Gyan Panchami, observed on the fifth day after Diwali in many Shvetambar Jain communities, is a day dedicated to knowledge, scriptures and the teachers who preserve them. Jainism treats right knowledge as one of the essential supports of liberation, together with right faith and right conduct. On this day sacred books, manuscripts and study materials are cleaned, respectfully arranged and worshipped, not because the physical book itself is divine but because it carries teachings that can guide the soul away from ignorance. Temples and study groups may hold scripture reading, lectures and special puja, while students renew attention to disciplined learning. Historically, the festival also reflects the importance Jain communities placed on preserving manuscript libraries and scholarly traditions. Gyan Panchami turns study into a spiritual responsibility: knowledge should lead to clearer perception, humility and better conduct.

Gyan Panchami is significant to the community that observes it and helps preserve religious, family and cultural continuity.

The manuscripts are taken out, dusted and displayed, and the congregation sees what the temple holds. A fast is kept and the knowledge is worshipped with five - five candles, five sweets, five kinds of grain. Nothing is written or studied casually that day.
